چکیده

We describe a modified method for assay of t-aminocaproic acid. Serum or cerebrospinal fluid is deproteinized, followed by cation-exchange column-chromatography, and N-trifluoroacetyl-n-butyl derivativesof amino acids are formed and separatedby gas chromatography.Tranexamic acid,a nonproteinamino acid, was used as an internal standard. The assay issensitiveand precise, and results correlate adequately with those obtained with an automated amino acid analyzer (ion-exchange chromatography).

Cerebral sinus thrombosis as a potential hazard of antifibrinolytic treatment in menorrhagia.

We describe a 42-year-old woman who developed superior sagittal and left transverse sinus thrombosis associated with prolonged epsilon-aminocaproic acid therapy for menorrhagia. This antifibrinolytic agent has been used in women with menorrhagia to promote clotting and reduce blood loss. Although increased risk of thromboembolic disease has been reported during treatment with epsilon-aminocapro...

The effect of some -aminocaproic acid derivatives on platelet responses

-Aminocaproic acid (EACA) is a synthetic low molecular drug with antifibrinolytic activity. However, treatment with this drug can be incidentally associated with an increased thrombotic tendency. The aim of the present work was to test synthetic EACA derivatives for their antiplatelet activities. We investigated the effect of three EACA derivatives with antifibrinolytic activity: I. -aminocapro...

Aprotinin But Not e-Aminocaproic Acid Decreases Interleukin-10 After Cardiac Surgery With Extracorporeal Circulation Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study in Patients Receiving Aprotinin and e-Aminocaproic Acid

Background—Extracorporeal circulation induces a systemic inflammatory response, which may adversely affect organ function. One manifestation of this response is increased fibrinolysis. Antifibrinolytic drugs such as aprotinin and e-aminocaproic acid have been effective in reducing fibrinolysis and blood loss after extracorporeal circulation; however, the effects of antifibrinolytic drugs on pro...

Con: Aprotinin has a good efficacy and safety profile relative to other alternatives for prevention of bleeding in cardiac surgery.

W. Scott Beattie, MD, PhD, FRCPC* Keyvan Karkouti, MD, MSc, FRCPC*† It is our position that, to reduce perioperative blood loss in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), all patients should receive a drug with antifibrinolytic properties (heretofore referred to as “antifibrinolytic drugs”), and that the drug of choice for this indication in most (if not all) pati...
